Pentagon Report - Afghan-and-India-focused militants continue to operate from Pakistan territory

The report says that Pakistan uses these proxy forces to hedge against the loss of influence in Afghanistan and to counter Indian’s superior military.

In context to Pakistan public commitment to support Afghan-led reconciliation, Pentagon in its report has said that such groups continue to act as the primary irritant in Afghan-Pakistan bilateral relations.

Pentagon also referred to the attack on the Indian Consulate in Heart, just three-days before swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi by a group of four heavily armed militants and termed the incident was deliberately timed to coincide with the ceremony.

Pentagon has praised India’s commitment and support for a stable and secure Afghanistan, and India and Afghanistan strategic partnership declaration signed in 2011. This declaration formalised cooperation on governance, economics, commerce, education, public administration, and security and law enforcement.

India’s response:
India has welcomed this report of Pentagon by stating that now international community is acknowledging the fact that terrorism derives support from Pakistan and thus terrorists should not be segmented.

Comment: Since a decade or more Pakistan has been a haven for terrorists and their activities. But Pentagon report accusing Pakistan for being the hot-bed of terrorism might be for two reasons. The visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the US and secondly because the US is withdrawing its forces from Afghanistan and knows that India is supposed to play a crucial role in making a secured Afghanistan, in future, which would benefit the region and facilitate economic corridors into Central Asia.
